In Memoriam - Fred Breitbeil

DR FRED W BREITBEIL, III of Orlando, FL died after a battle with cancer. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Barbara; children, Steve (Bonnie), Ken (Jessica), Teresa (David) Mikeal and James; grandchildren, Christina, John, Pricilla, William and siblings, Robert Breitbeil and Marlene Henderson. Fred graduated from Xavier University, was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving as a 1st Lieutenant, received his PhD in Organic Chemistry from University of Cincinnati and was a 35 year professor at DePaul University. He continued research and publishing at the University of Central Florida after retirement. A private memorial will be held at December 17, 2011.

In Memoriam - Shirley March

Shirley March, nee Lanick, age 82, late of Crest Hill and formerly of Joliet, passed away peacefully, Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011 at home, surrounded by her loving family.  She was the beloved mother of Gail (Robert) Butcher of Orland Park, Carol (Michael) Bialon of Plainfield and Janice (John) Slawinski of Plainfield; dearest grandmother of Beth Butcher, Brian (Amy) Butcher, Robbie Butcher, Amy (Eric) Jensen, Adam Bialon and Nicholas,  Alyse and Julia Slawinski; dear great-grandmother of Andrew, Matthew and Luke Jensen; fond sister of Lorraine (late Bill) Klann of Park Ridge; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded by her husband of 50 years, Stanley C. March (May 8, 2000); and her parents, Joseph and Irene Lanick.  Shirley was a devoted wife and a caring and loving mother who will be fondly remembered always by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Funeral Services for Shirley March will be Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011 at 9:45 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet, IL 60431 to St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, Plainfield, for Mass at 10:30 a.m. Interment Resurrection Cemetery, Justice.  Memorials to the Alzheimer's Association would be appreciated.  Visitation Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

It is with sorrow that we have learned of the death of Shirley March. Shirley worked at DePaul from 1978 until her retirement in 1991 from the Cashier's Office. Shirley passed away on December 17 at the age of 82. She is survived by three children, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services have been held. Memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association are appreciated. In Memoriam - John Price

John Edward Price, 70, of Columbus, died at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. Mr. Price is survived by his wife, Mary McGoohan Price.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus.
Arrangements are being made by Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home.

John Price, 70, DePaul Professor and Administrator


John Edward Price, 70, a longtime Oak Parker who retired to Columbus, Ind., died on Nov. 2, 2011 at Hospice of South Central Indiana. Born on Aug. 23, 1941 in Detroit, Mich., the son of Edward F. Price and Felicia Karr Price and the stepson of Edward W. Kulaski, he married Mary McGoohan in Evanston on June 28, 1968.

Mr. Price studied at Marquette University (B.A. and M.A) and Loyola University of Chicago (Ph.D.). His academic area of interest was Shakespeare and the English Renaissance. In 1968, he joined the faculty of DePaul University, where he taught 40 different courses and served as director of the DePaul College Writing Program, head of the Division of Humanities, director of the Graduate Program in English, and director of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies.

He served as president of a number of organizations, including the Marquette University chapter of the classics honor fraternity Eta Sigma Phi, the Chicago Area College English Association, the Oak Park Tennis Association, and the Board of Trustees of Beacon Unitarian Church, Oak Park. He was also an active volunteer with Dialogue, serving as a reader for the visually impaired and a member of the executive committee of the Newberry Library Center for Renaissance Studies. Upon retirement in 1999, he received DePaul's highest faculty honor, the Via Sapientiae Award.

In June 1999, he moved to Columbus, Ind., where he enjoyed hiking, boating, bicycling, writing and community involvement. He was a volunteer tutor for the McDowell Adult Literacy Program and participated in the Community Hot Meals program for a decade as well as a member of Shakespeare Club, Meridian Kiwanis, and the Sunday Service Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his son, James Brendan Price (Susan) of Oak Park and his daughter, Alison Price (Douglas Askham) of Forest Park; his sister, Lenore Kulaski (John) Treba; his brother, Edward James (Karen) Price; his grandchildren, Conor Bernoski Price, Nathan Thompson, Nicholas Thompson, Ian Askham and Anne Askham; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the McDowell Adult Literacy Program, Hospice of South Central Indiana, or the general scholarship fund of a favorite college or university. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus, Ind., 7850 Goeller Road, at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3.

In Memoriam - Stanley Schmidt

Stanley E. Schmidt, 67, of Elmhurst. Born April 3, 1944 in New Orleans, LA and died in Chicago on October 29, 2011. Dear son of the late Ervin H. and Clara B. Schmidt; brother of Thomas (Kathryn) Schmidt; uncle of Margaret Schmidt. As a Luthier, Stanley worked doing restoration and tonal adjustments of classical instruments. For many years Stanley worked as a part time Reference Librarian at DePaul and Northeastern Illinois Universities in Chicago. Memorial Services at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Meister Gives History of DPU Art

Prior to introducing Greg Harris, Assistant Art Museum Curator and DES Luncheon speaker, Dick Meister provided the audience with some history regarding DePaul's art collection and exhibit spaces.  He told of the efforts in the early 1980s to get a handle on what the University actually owned.  Of how Simone Zurawski, faculty member in the History of Art and Architecture department, later cared for and curated the collection -- opening the first museum space in McGaw.

When the Richardson Library opened in 1993-1994, an area was allocated for the Art Museum and provided a much larger space for exhibits. In the late 1990s, the University, at the urging of Doris Brown, recruited and hired its first full-time and current curator.  Louise Lincoln had steadily moved up the curating ladder at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts before coming to DePaul and was a perfect match for the university and the community.

Through her efforts and with the support of Fr. Holtscheider, the Art Museum -- which the retirees toured after lunch -- became a reality.  His presentation was caught on film and is shared here.

DES Matching Grant Announced

At the October 21 DES Luncheon, Fr. Ed Udovic announced Mission and Values will match up to $15,000 of scholarship gifts designated for the DePaul Emeritus Endowed Scholarship.  Letters were sent to all DES Members and Spouses of deceased DES Members earlier in the month sharing this wonderful news.

In the following video filmed at the DES Luncheon, Fr. Ed eloquently describes the difference a small scholarship can make to an undergraduate in the student's Junior or Senior year.

DES Luncheon, October 21, 2011

Nearly 60 attendees enjoyed a great day at DePaul on October 21.  We were feted to an Oktoberfest luncheon of beer and cheese soup, wienerschnitzel with spaetzels and red cabbage, followed by a piece of delicious cheese strudel.   At our places was an ever-so-cute box of chocolates.  To say the least, we were very well fed.  Thank you Alice Farrell!

DES Newsletter

Bi-annually, news of the DePaul Emeritus Society is distributed via the DES Newsletter using both the internet and US post office, depending on how you have chosen to receive your news.  Our editor, Nancy Rospenda, keeps us informed of the news of the past six months, dates to remember and most importantly, what is going on with your colleagues.  However, what she shares is only as good as what you share with her.  On the table today and also via the DES Webpage, is a form to let us know “What’s new with you!”  We are sure you enjoy reading what your colleagues have been up to, e.g., new grandchildren, travel, hobbies, publications, etc. – and they also would like to know what you have been doing too.  Fill out the form today and Nancy will incorporate it into our Winter Newsletter.  We all look forward to reading about “What’s new with you!”

Abstract
Dr. Schwartz will describe two of the social movements which took place during the 1970’s that were dedicated to leveling the playing field for women in science. These particular movements resulted in the formation of the “Association for Women in Science” and “Women in Endocrinology.” Dr. Schwartz was involved in the early stages of both groups, and her experience closely reflects other women-oriented science associations which developed during those early years. Dr. Schwartz will then describe some of the reproductive science she has carried out in the lab, as examples of the kind of bioscience research possible with a laboratory of one’s own, focusing specifically on the “discovery” of the female, as well as male, gonadal hormone “inhibin.”

About the Speaker
Neena Schwartz was born in Baltimore MD in 1926. She received a BA in Physiology from Goucher College in 1948 and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1953. She became an instructor in the Department of Physiology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1953. After four years she moved to the Psychiatric Institute at Michael Reese Hospital where she served as Director of the Biological Labs. She then returned to the Illinois College of Medicine, becoming a Full Professor in 1967, and occupied this position until 1973. During this time she also served as Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs of the college. In 1973 she occupied a position as Professor in the Department of Physiology at Northwestern University College of Medicine. In 1974 she became Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences in North western’s College of Arts and Science and William Deering Professor of Biological Sciences. In 1980 she formed the Program (later Center) for Reproductive Science at the University. She has served as President of the Society for the Study of Reproduction and of the Endocrine Society. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Science.

DES visits DPAM

Greg Harris, Assistant Art Museum Curator, took DES Members for a tour of the new DePaul Art Museum after the October 21st Luncheon.

The attendees not only received a tour of the exhibit space but also got to see some of the behind-the-scenes work spaces.

The Art Museum has received wonderful press in the local papers since its opening in September.  If you didn't have the opportunity to see the museum, put it on your list of things to do the next time you are on the Lincoln Park Campus.

DES Election - 2012

Elaine Beaudoin, DES Chair, asked the attendees at the October 21, 2011 Luncheon to consider placing their name in nomination or nominating a colleague for one of the two open positions on the 2012 DES Steering Committee.  A call for nominations also will be included in the December DES Newsletter.

She reported a Nominating Committee of the Steering Committee had been created and is composed of Jerry Goldman, Phil Kemp, Nancy Rospenda and herself.  The Nominating Committee will vet all names assuring DES membership, local residency and willingness to serve.

Please consider putting your name in nomination.  Ballots will be sent via US Mail in late February.

A little bit about the DePaul Art Museum DPAM --

• Permanent Collection: The DePaul Art Museum's permanent collection, built from generous gifts and judicious purchases, ranges in time from the seventh century BCE to the present, and spans all continents and artistic media.  A changing selection of works from the collection is on view throughout the year.
• Exhibitions: As a teaching museum, DPAM develops and seeks out exhibitions that showcase new research, draw on multiple disciplines, and provoke thought and discussion.  Many exhibitions are developed in collaboration with distinguished DePaul Faculty members, but the museum also hosts selected traveling shows from museums here and abroad.
• Tours and Public Programs: Tours of the exhibitions guided by staff or education specialists are available at no charge for classes and community groups, and can be tailored to the age and interests of participants.
• Building: The museum's new 15,000 square-foot building has been planned to provide a welcoming environment for visitors and to meet the environmental requirements of artworks. Its location directly beside the Fullerton El station makes it accessible from all parts of the city.  A large arched window on the building facade invites visitors inside, while a bay window overlooking the El platform informs commuters about exhibitions and events.

In Memoriam - Warren Scheideman

Warren Scheideman, assistant professor in SNL, died Aug. 25 at the age of 69.

Scheideman, who joined the faculty in 1981 as a part-time instructor, became a full-time academic advisor and then, upon completing his doctorate through the College of Education at DePaul, an assistant professor.  His interests centered on intellectual history, literature and film, and adult learning.

Over the years, Scheideman served as a faculty mentor for hundreds of students in the undergraduate program.  He also taught ethics in the graduate liberal learning seminar series and qualitative inquiry in the Master of Arts in educating adults program.  His areas of expertise included British mysteries, military history, and the social history of Chicago and Oak park. Scheideman published at least 100 articles and papers in these areas.

"I met Warren shortly after I came to SNL/DePaul in late 1983, in my capacity as associate dean/faculty mentor," says Professor Catherine Marienau.  "I had numerous occasions to participate with Warren on students' academic committees, observe his classroom teaching (both undergraduate and graduate), and listen to many stories from appreciative students who had Warren as a course instructor or faculty mentor.  Warren was masterful at listening to each person, drawing out the sparks of a person's curiosity, and supporting further development of that person's intellectual capacities."

Marienau adds, "On a personal note, I had occasion to drive Warren home to Oak Park at least once a week over many years.  I never minded the heavy traffic or evening blinding snowstorms because the conversation with Warren was always engaging and illuminating."

Gretchen Osbourne presented two sessions specifically for retirees addressing the changes starting January 1, 2012 in our health care benefits.  It was good to see "soon-to-be-retired" faculty and staff at the sessions too! The changes were outlined in a previous post which can be viewed by clicking here.

Of note, under the 2012 prescription plan change, your cost of mail-order prescriptions will be significantly reduced.  Additional clarification on using out-of-network providers for retirees 65 and over and for those under 65 years of age will be forthcoming.

Rev. John T. Richardson, C.M.

Born in 1923, John Richardson entered the Vincentian Community in 1942, and was ordained a priest in 1949.  After completing his doctorate in theology, he taught in a major seminary until he joined DePaul University as an administrator in 1954.  For twelve of his forty-three years of administration he was President of the University.  In 1997 he went to Kenya, East Africa, and returned to DePaul in 2010.

DePaul Information Directory

The following note was sent out from the University Secretary's Office on October 4, 2011.

Dear Colleagues,

In an effort to become more environmentally friendly and responsive to changes within the University, the 2011-2012 DePaul Information Directory is entirely web-based. The paper version is no longer being published. Later this fall, the directory website (http://directory.depaul.edu) will be redesigned using SharePoint, which will allow individual departments to update and maintain their own Directory Information. We will provide more details regarding the new website as they become available.

Overview of Retiree Benefit Changes for 2012

Human Resources will be conducting two sessions on the upcoming retiree medical plan changes for 2012. 

• Wednesday, October 12, 9:30 - 10:00 a.m., LPC Student Center, Room 325
• Wednesday, October 12, 1:30 - 2:00 p.m., Loop DePaul Center, Concourse Level

The changes include:

§ Enhanced Mail-Order Prescription Drug Program. Effective January 1, 2012 the mail order prescriptions (90-day supply) will be based on the following co-pay structure:
Co-Pay/Generic Drug -- $20
Formulary Drug -- $50
Non-formulary Drug -- $80

§ Blue Cross Blue Shield to Out-of-network services. Starting January 1, 2012 BCBS is changing its reimbursement rates for services by Non-PPO/non-contract providers to match Medicare reimbursement rates. This may result in retirees being responsible for additional out-of-pocket expenses if they use out-of-network services.

§ Streamlined Billing and Collection of Retiree Medical Premium. The administrative function for billing and collection will be changing in 2012 to better serve retiree medical plan participants. Retirees will receive details and instructions for submitting payment in a separate mailing. We are asking retirees not to send their 2012 medical premium payment with the enrollment materials.

Christmas at DePaul 2011

***  PERFORMANCES "SOLD" OUT ***

Plans are underway for Christmas at DePaul 2011.  The performance dates are:

• Thursday, December 8, 7:00 p.m.
• Friday, December 9, 6:30 p.m.
• Friday, December 9, 9:00 p.m.

This year, tickets will be given out via a lottery system. People will be able to sign up for the lottery beginning October 27th through November 7th and will be notified if they've received tickets on November 9th.  Once the Christmas at DePaul 2011 website is up, the URL will be added to this posting. 

St. Vincent's Health Benefit Faire, October 11 & 12

Look for information on the October 11th and 12th St. Vincent's Health Benefit Faire in your mailbox in the next couple of days.  This is a wonderful opportunity to not only take advantage of wellness screening and get an overview of retiree benefit changes for 2012, but also to visit with colleagues and pick up a few tips regarding financial wellness and a market update.
