DES Luncheon, May 1, 2019

More than 75 DES Members enjoyed camaraderie, ate a delicious lunch and heard from President Esteban regarding DePaul's strategic plans.

Additionally:

• Fr. Edward Udovic, CM and Alice Farrell were thanked for their many years of DES support.

• Don Casey, Marty Kalin and Nancy Rospenda were re-elected to the Steering Committee. Their terms end in 2022.

• Sue Kosinski reported 5 scholarships were awarded this past year from the DES Scholarship fund.

• Nancy Rospenda announced she was running for President. You had to be there!

• Following the luncheon, Rich Goode provided an estate planning seminar for members

A good time was had by all.

Luncheon, May 15, 2015

Nearly 100 DES members attended the Spring Luncheon in the LPC Student Union. We were treated to a fine meal and an exceptional music program. Two student vocalists from the Music School shared their talents with the retirees. You can enjoy a few seconds of their performance in the video below.

Additionally, Dick Meister and Dave Sims were thanked for their years of service on the DES Steering Committee. The 2015 DES Steering Committee election concluded with Susan Kosinski being re-elected for another term and two new members, Jeanne LaDuke and Jean Bryan joining the continuing members: Woods Bowman, Kathryn DeGraff, Jerry Goldman, Helen Marlborough and Nancy Rospenda. Congrats to all.

DES Luncheon, May 18, 2012

We had another wonderful gathering of the DePaul Emeritus Society at the luncheon on Friday, May 18, 2012.  As has become our Spring custom, Alice Farrell prepared note cards upon which attendees had the opportunity to write short messages to retirees who were unable to join us.

After a lovely "cocktail" reception catching up with colleagues, the more than 60 retirees and guests heard DES updates from Elaine Beaudoin; was introduced to one of the DES Scholarship recipients by Denny Shea; and then, after receiving a very warm welcome from Dick Meister, our guest speaker, Dr. Susan Solway, Chair, History of Art and Architecture, furnished a lively and informative presentation on the new Arts and Letters Hall.

As always, Alice selected an outstanding menu including a spring salad with fruit, a generous slice of poached salmon on a bed of couscous with asparagus spears, and a deliciously sweet red velvet brownie.   The wait staff was most generous providing us with red and white wines.

Following lunch, Jerry Goldman conducted the DES Steering Committee Election.  He asked for nominations from the audience and hearing none, placed in nomination the names of candidates already received. By acclamation, Dick Meister and Doris Brown were each elected to a three year term.  Congratulation to you both!  Jerry also give a short update on HR items his committee is working on.

Phil Kemp announced the Program Committee is considering some vocal entertainment for our Fall Luncheon on October 19 and shared we would be going to the Loop Campus for our Spring DES Luncheon on May 17, 2013,

In preparation for the Summer Newsletter, Nancy Rospenda asked the attendees "What was new?"   She asked all members to share their news and send it to her at nrospend@depaul.edu   Everyone enjoys hearing what their colleagues are up to, so please send her a note with your activities, accomplishments and what gives you joy!

Elaine Beaudoin recognized the loss of four members since our last luncheon: Dick Houk, Virginia Rutherford, Rosemary Bannan and Herb Newman.  They each made a termendous impact on the University.  The three faculty members, collectively, served the University for more than 100 years.

At the end of the luncheon, Margaret Marnell, Program Assistant, History of Art and Architecture, lead a tour of the Arts and Letters Hall.  For more information about the tour click here.

DES Steering Committee Members

At the May 18 DES Luncheon, Jerry Goldman placed in nomination Dick Meister's and Doris Brown's names to fill the two open Steering Committee positions.  Not receiving any additional nominations from those in attendance, he moved Dick and Doris unanimously be elected. And they were -- by acclamation!  Congratulations to Dick who continues on the Committee and to Doris who replaces the slot previously held by Denny Shea.

Our outgoing Steering Committee member, Denny Shea, enabled the DES Scholarship program to flourish under his leadership.  Through his hard work, and in tandem with Dick Meister, he lead the effort to raise more than $88,000 in DES scholarship gifts.  To date, 10 scholarships have been awarded to undergraduate juniors and seniors in needs of funds to complete their education at DePaul University.  Denny has also spearheaded the effort to survey the DES membership to determine how the DES can be more effective.  The work on our second survey will be completed this summer and the membership will hear about the results in October.  Denny, we can't thank you enough for your service.

DES Luncheon, May 18, 2012

We hope you are planning on joining us for the Spring DES Luncheon on May 18, 2012.  By now you should have received your invitation.  If not, click on the image below and respond to Alice Farrell.

Dr. Susan Solway, History of Art and Architecture Chair, will provide us with an understanding of the plans that went into the design of the newest building on the Lincoln Park Campus, the Art and Letters Hall.  After lunch she will lead us on a tour of the facility which is across the street from the Student Center where our lunch will be held.

Come and meet several of the 2012 DES Scholarship recipients.  With the generous contribution of our DES members and the matching grant from Mission and Values, the DES has been able to grant nearly $15,000 to upper class undergraduates.

And, help us elect the next two positions on the Steering Committee.

DES Steering Committee Election, 2012

Dear DES Member -

We are very pleased Dick Meister and Doris Brown have placed their names in nomination for the two openings on the DES Steering Committee.  Since there have been no other individuals who have been nominated, we will not be sending out ballots this year.  At the DES Luncheon on may 18, Dick and Doris' names will be placed in nomination, along with any additional nominations from those in attendance.  Once the nomination ballot has been determined, those in attendance will be asked to cast their written vote for one candidate to fill the faculty opening and one candidate to fill the staff opening.  However, if no other names are placed in nomination, those in attendance will be asked to vote, by a show of hands, for the slate presented.

Watch for the May 18 Luncheon invitation in early April.  We hope you will be able to join us.

DES Election - 2012

Elaine Beaudoin, DES Chair, asked the attendees at the October 21, 2011 Luncheon to consider placing their name in nomination or nominating a colleague for one of the two open positions on the 2012 DES Steering Committee.  A call for nominations also will be included in the December DES Newsletter.

She reported a Nominating Committee of the Steering Committee had been created and is composed of Jerry Goldman, Phil Kemp, Nancy Rospenda and herself.  The Nominating Committee will vet all names assuring DES membership, local residency and willingness to serve.

Please consider putting your name in nomination.  Ballots will be sent via US Mail in late February.

Thank you for your responses to the DES nomination request that was recently sent out. Based on your responses, we have identified the faculty and staff emeriti who are interested in serving in the DES Steering Committee.

Below are listed the candidates who have agreed to serve if elected. Please select one staff and two faculty retirees, and reply by email with your choices. Your vote will be kept confidential. The candidates receiving the highest vote count will join the Steering Committee. Please send your reply by Friday, April 29, 2011. We plan to announce the results at the DES spring luncheon, which will be held on Friday, May 20. We hope you will be able to attend.
