DES Members Invited to The Magic Flute Performance

OPERA INVITATION

Please join other members of the DePaul Emeritus Society at the matinee performance of Mozart’s The Magic Flute by DePaul Opera Theatre:  Sunday, March 15, 2:00 p.m. at the Merle Reskin Theatre, 60 E. Balbo Drive.  For tickets in our group, contact Helen Marlborough (hmarlbor@depaul.edu) or Alice Farrell (afarrell@depaul.edu) no later than Friday, March 6. 

This is a great opera for both opera fans and first-time audiences.  As the university’s News Release summarizes it,

“The Magic Flute” is a story of magic, wonder and love conquering all. The opera tells the story of Tamino, a young hero who is sent on a mission by the Queenof Night to rescue her daughter Pamina from the clutches of the evil wizard Sarastro. He must use the help of his sidekick Papageno and the powers of the titular flute to survive the trials of Sarastro’s temple. However, not everything is how it seems. . . .

The opera combines Mozart’s music, a timeless story, colorful characters and Maxfield Parrish-inspired costumes and scenery. This opera is perfect for families and has both sung and spoken dialogue. It will be presented in English.

Co-Founder of the Doors, DePaul Alum dies

Ray Manzarek is not a retiree.  He is, however, a DePaul alum who graduated with a degree in Economics.  He is also the founding member of The Doors whose piercing electric organ sound defined their career-establishing hit "Light My Fire" and most of the group's cornerstone songs.  Ray and Jim Morrison decided to form a band built around Morrison's poetry and Manzarek's music.  He passed away Monday in Germany after a lengthy batter with bile duct cancer.  He was 74.

Sousa-Palooza LPC Outdoor Concert

Calling all Retirees

We hope you will be able to make the Sousa-Palooza, an outdoor event and concert featuring the DePaul Wind Symphony, Sunday, June 2, 2013.

 

Join the School of Music in celebrating its centennial with an old fashioned John Philip Sousa outdoor concert.  The DePaul Wind Symphony, conducted by "Sousa himself," will take us back 100 years to enjoy a concert featuring Sousa marches such as Stars and Stripes Forever. The concert will also feature faculty soloists Alyce Johnson, piccolo; Matt Lee, trumpet; and Mark Fisher, euphonium.

InterChorus Performs at DES Luncheon

DePaul's InterChorus performed at the October 17, 2012 DES Luncheon to the delight of the retirees. 

InterChorus is a coed a Cappella group composed of undergraduate students from disciplines as diverse as anthropology and digital media.  Now in their second year, they had 80 individuals audition to be part of the group.  After listening to InterChorus, we can see why so many students wanted to join of this wonderful organization.

The DES thanks InterChorus for sharing their beautiful voices with us and wishes them much luck during the academic year.

Christmas at DePaul 2011

***  PERFORMANCES "SOLD" OUT ***

Plans are underway for Christmas at DePaul 2011.  The performance dates are:

• Thursday, December 8, 7:00 p.m.
• Friday, December 9, 6:30 p.m.
• Friday, December 9, 9:00 p.m.

This year, tickets will be given out via a lottery system. People will be able to sign up for the lottery beginning October 27th through November 7th and will be notified if they've received tickets on November 9th.  Once the Christmas at DePaul 2011 website is up, the URL will be added to this posting. 

Christmas at DePaul, 2009

Each year, DePaul University celebrates Christmas with a wonderful musical program. The dates for the 2010 Christmas at DePaul are December 9 and 10. Information regarding tickets will be made available in November. Mark your calendars for a wonderful evening.
