About the DePaul Emeritus Society

DePaul University values its ongoing connections with its faculty and staff retirees, as it values their past contributions to the university’s mission. The DePaul University Emeritus Society was founded in 2008 with the merger of the Staff Emeritus Society and the Emeritus Professors Association. The Society is sponsored by the University’s Office of Mission and Values.

The purpose of the DePaul Emeritus Society is to provide a means for ongoing connection, communication, and socialization between the university and its emeritus faculty and staff, and between individual retirees whose professional lives were for so many years dedicated to university service.

The term "scientist" often inspires the stale image of lab goggles and a white coat, but who's responsible for transforming this stereotype - the media or the scientists themselves? Is a harmless stereotype all that bad? The public's interpretation of scientists and their work influences levels of personal investment and involvement when it comes to making decisions that are informed by scientific research. It's beneficial for researchers of all types to consider incorporating science communication as an integral part of their work in order to ensure our society may reach a higher degree of literacy in those fields, and inspire new generations of creative critical thinkers. Join Emily Graslie, the Chief Curiosity Correspondent of The Field Museum, as she discusses a variety of ways in which science communicators may work as liaisons between researchers and non-specialists in order to achieve these goals.

About Our Speaker:Emily Graslie graduated from The University of Montana with a BFA in painting in 2011. Her relationship with science began as an internship with The University of Montana Zoological Museum during her senior year. What started off as a means to practice scientific illustration gradually developed into a love of skeletal preparation and an interest in the inner workings of natural history museums. In January of 2013, with the help of YouTube educator Hank Green and producer Michael Aranda, Emily and co. launched a YouTube channel about science museums and research collections.  Brain Scoop' aims to share the wonderful inner and outer workings of natural history museums by discussing all aspects of science, biology, and the joys of discovery. In July of 2013 she moved to The Field Museum and became their first-ever Chief Curiosity Correspondent, where she uses a variety of new media to share the Field's stories with passionate learners from all over the world.

About Our Speaker:

Dr. Gilliam's research focuses on vulnerable populations at risk of poor reproductive health outcomes due to health, educational, social, and economic disparities, including low-income populations, women of diverse racial/ethnic groups, and adolescents. She studies contraception, theory-based behavioral interventions, and innovative digital media and game-based educational interventions to promote positive youth development. Recognizing how a complex interplay of systems affect health outcomes, Dr. Gilliam incorporates partners from many disciplines in her research. In November 2012, she launched The Center for Interdisciplinary Inquiry and Innovation in Sexual and Reproductive Health (Ci3) and the Game Changer Design Lab at the University of Chicago to facilitate collaborative research and programming, and to leverage the university's resources to make significant improvements in the sexual and reproductive health of vulnerable communities.

“Artful Science – Recent Discoveries from the Scientific Examination of Works of Art”
Francesca Casadio, Ph.D.
AW Mellon Senior Conservation Scientist, The Art Institute of Chicago


Most people are familiar with the simple left brain- right brain theory, which associates more objective, analytical thinking to the left side of the brain, and more creative, intuitive and subjective thinking to the right side of the brain. In this talk, Francesca Casadio, Senior Conservation Scientist (and chemist) from the Art Institute of Chicago, will discuss how scientific analysis can deepen our understanding of an artist’s creative process, add important elements to determine provenance, chronology and authorship, as well as increase our appreciation of the aesthetic (right brain) and technical (left brain) aspects of a masterpiece.  In particular, Dr. Casadio will present an area of scientific pursuit that uses the technologies of today to investigate two fascinating examples of cutting-edge technologies of their times that revolutionized artistic practices: the discovery of white porcelain in Europe in the 18th century and the innovative use by Pablo Picasso of industrial enamel paint in his work.

About the Speaker

Francesca Casadio joined the Art Institute of Chicago in July 2003 to establish and direct a state of the art conservation science laboratory. As the Museum’s first A.W Mellon Senior Conservation Scientist she is in charge of planning and carrying out scientific research in support of the preservation and study of the Museum’s collection. Dr. Casadio has also established and co-directs a research and education collaborative program in conservation science with Northwestern University that brings to bear techniques and cutting-edge scientific expertise available at the University to problems of interest to the museum community. Francesca Casadio received her Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry from the University of Milan, Italy.
 
In 2006 Dr. Casadio was awarded the L’OrĂ©al Art and Science of Color Silver Prize for distinguished contribution to the creative meeting of science and art through color with her collaborative research with Professor Richard P. Van Duyne of Northwestern University. Her work has been featured on air, online and in print on: reuters online media, US National Public radio, The Chicago Tribune, Crain’s Chicago Business, Italy’s  il Corriere della sera, il Sole 24 ore, Vogue Italia, radio rai, and other media.

Abstract
Dr. Schwartz will describe two of the social movements which took place during the 1970’s that were dedicated to leveling the playing field for women in science. These particular movements resulted in the formation of the “Association for Women in Science” and “Women in Endocrinology.” Dr. Schwartz was involved in the early stages of both groups, and her experience closely reflects other women-oriented science associations which developed during those early years. Dr. Schwartz will then describe some of the reproductive science she has carried out in the lab, as examples of the kind of bioscience research possible with a laboratory of one’s own, focusing specifically on the “discovery” of the female, as well as male, gonadal hormone “inhibin.”

About the Speaker
Neena Schwartz was born in Baltimore MD in 1926. She received a BA in Physiology from Goucher College in 1948 and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1953. She became an instructor in the Department of Physiology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1953. After four years she moved to the Psychiatric Institute at Michael Reese Hospital where she served as Director of the Biological Labs. She then returned to the Illinois College of Medicine, becoming a Full Professor in 1967, and occupied this position until 1973. During this time she also served as Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs of the college. In 1973 she occupied a position as Professor in the Department of Physiology at Northwestern University College of Medicine. In 1974 she became Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences in North western’s College of Arts and Science and William Deering Professor of Biological Sciences. In 1980 she formed the Program (later Center) for Reproductive Science at the University. She has served as President of the Society for the Study of Reproduction and of the Endocrine Society. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Science.
