2013 Scholarship Recipients - Very Grateful

This past Spring, seven scholarships were granted from the DePaul Emeritus Society Endowed Scholarship and the Office of Mission and Values matching funds.   Our scholarship funds are earmarked for Juniors and Seniors.

Four recipients graduated this past Spring and answered the question:  What does this scholarship mean to you and your family?

"This scholarship means a lot to me, as well as my family.  We have gone through a financial hardship this year, and it has really relieved a lot of stress in our lives right now.  I was always told I would never make it to a big school because it would be too expensive.  But I am graduating this June and I am so proud that I have come this far, with everyone's help.  Thank you!"

"This scholarship has provided a means to finish my education.  It gave me the resources to finance my final semester at DePaul and get my bachelor's degree.  To my family, this scholarship provides the first graduate of a higher education institution."

"It means the ability to rest easy at night.  My mother already works two jobs, and I work over 30 hours a week plus I attend school full time.  Without this scholarship, I would need to work extra time, and it would impact my studies.  I am really grateful for your generous contribution, and I hope that I make the most of it."

"This means too much to express in words.  Coming from a family that needs to work twice as hard to get anywhere, the money is appreciated. To me, this scholarship pushes me to work harder in order to finish school and stay motivated, despite the workload and stress that comes with it.  Still, I continue to tell myself that it will all be worth it in the end.  Donors that contribute to our education make it all worth it, and they prove to us that our education matters to them, too."

Half Way to $15,000 Scholarship Goal

Dick Meister and Doris Brown, Co-chairs of the DES Philanthropy Committee, report that we have raised $7,640 as of Nov. 1 for the 2013 DES Endowed Scholarship Fund. Thirty gifts have been made which means there are still a lot of DES members  whose generosity can help us get to the $15,000 we need to meet the challenge match from the Office of Mission and Values. DES Luncheon, May 18, 2012

We had another wonderful gathering of the DePaul Emeritus Society at the luncheon on Friday, May 18, 2012.  As has become our Spring custom, Alice Farrell prepared note cards upon which attendees had the opportunity to write short messages to retirees who were unable to join us.

After a lovely "cocktail" reception catching up with colleagues, the more than 60 retirees and guests heard DES updates from Elaine Beaudoin; was introduced to one of the DES Scholarship recipients by Denny Shea; and then, after receiving a very warm welcome from Dick Meister, our guest speaker, Dr. Susan Solway, Chair, History of Art and Architecture, furnished a lively and informative presentation on the new Arts and Letters Hall.

As always, Alice selected an outstanding menu including a spring salad with fruit, a generous slice of poached salmon on a bed of couscous with asparagus spears, and a deliciously sweet red velvet brownie.   The wait staff was most generous providing us with red and white wines.

Following lunch, Jerry Goldman conducted the DES Steering Committee Election.  He asked for nominations from the audience and hearing none, placed in nomination the names of candidates already received. By acclamation, Dick Meister and Doris Brown were each elected to a three year term.  Congratulation to you both!  Jerry also give a short update on HR items his committee is working on.

Phil Kemp announced the Program Committee is considering some vocal entertainment for our Fall Luncheon on October 19 and shared we would be going to the Loop Campus for our Spring DES Luncheon on May 17, 2013,

In preparation for the Summer Newsletter, Nancy Rospenda asked the attendees "What was new?"   She asked all members to share their news and send it to her at nrospend@depaul.edu   Everyone enjoys hearing what their colleagues are up to, so please send her a note with your activities, accomplishments and what gives you joy!

Elaine Beaudoin recognized the loss of four members since our last luncheon: Dick Houk, Virginia Rutherford, Rosemary Bannan and Herb Newman.  They each made a termendous impact on the University.  The three faculty members, collectively, served the University for more than 100 years.

At the end of the luncheon, Margaret Marnell, Program Assistant, History of Art and Architecture, lead a tour of the Arts and Letters Hall.  For more information about the tour click here.

Scholarship Recipient Note

Hi Dennis,

I just wanted to send you a quick thank you for including me in yesterday's DES luncheon.  It was a pleasure meeting you and your wife - she is the absolute sweetest!  I enjoyed my afternoon and learning more about DES and its dedication to DePaul University.  I really respect the society as a whole and am very thankful for the scholarship that I was given.

I will be in touch in the future and might just take you up on your offer to meet with DePaul Law's admissions. My first step is to get through the LSAT after this whole study process is over!

Again, I thank you for your hospitality yesterday and welcoming me to the society that has really benefited me as a DePaul student.  I look forward to keeping in touch.

Scholarship Recipients Announced

Denny Shea announced the recipients of the 2012 DES Scholarship Awards at the May 18 Spring Luncheon.  With the matching grant provided by Mission and Values, the DES was able to award 7 partial scholarships this Spring bringing the total number of scholarships awarded to 10 since the establishment of the fund.

DES Luncheon - May 18, 2012

Friday, May 18, is the next DES Luncheon.  We are fortunate to have Dr. Susan Solway, Chair Art History and Architecture, as our guest speaker.  She will be sharing with us the unique aspects of the newest building on the Lincoln Park Campus -- Arts and Letters Hall.

Also, we are pleased to welcome several of this year's DES Scholarship recipients.  Thanks to the generosity of our members and the matching gift of Mission and Values, the DES granted seven scholarships this Spring Quarter!  Come and meet the recipients.

Additionally, we will hold the election for the two openings on the DES Steering Committee and provide updates from various DES Committees.

DES Luncheon, May 18, 2012

Dr. Susan Solway, History of Art and Architecture Chair, will provide us with an understanding of the plans that went into the design of the newest building on the Lincoln Park Campus, the Art and Letters Hall.  After lunch she will lead us on a tour of the facility which is across the street from the Student Center where our lunch will be held.

Come and meet several of the 2012 DES Scholarship recipients.  With the generous contribution of our DES members and the matching grant from Mission and Values, the DES has been able to grant nearly $15,000 to upper class undergraduates.

And, help us elect the next two positions on the Steering Committee.

Philanthropy FY2012

Denny Shea reported at the DES Steering Committee in mid-January that gifts totaling $10,800 have been received to date for the 2012 DES Scholarship Fund.  Reminder letters to those DES members we have not yet heard from will be sent in mid-February.  This year, and for the next two years, Mission and Values will match up to $15,000 in grant money to be dispensed each Spring Quarter.  This will permit all the dollars raised to be added to the principal of the DES endowment, allowing it to grow at an ever faster rate and guaranteeing scholarship funding in the years to come.

As Denny says: "Please consider this wonderful opportunity to serve more deserving undergraduate students."

DES Matching Grant Announced

At the October 21 DES Luncheon, Fr. Ed Udovic announced Mission and Values will match up to $15,000 of scholarship gifts designated for the DePaul Emeritus Endowed Scholarship.  Letters were sent to all DES Members and Spouses of deceased DES Members earlier in the month sharing this wonderful news.

In the following video filmed at the DES Luncheon, Fr. Ed eloquently describes the difference a small scholarship can make to an undergraduate in the student's Junior or Senior year.

DES Luncheon, October 21, 2011

Nearly 60 attendees enjoyed a great day at DePaul on October 21.  We were feted to an Oktoberfest luncheon of beer and cheese soup, wienerschnitzel with spaetzels and red cabbage, followed by a piece of delicious cheese strudel.   At our places was an ever-so-cute box of chocolates.  To say the least, we were very well fed.  Thank you Alice Farrell!

• Phil Kemp invited members to join the newly created "virtual" Special Events and Projects Committee.  He said the meetings all would be held online and would deal with recommendations regarding program speakers, special events, volunteer opportunities and projects similar to the Memorabilia Project

DES Giving Report, FY2011

The gifts from members of DES to the DePaul Emeritus Society Scholarship fund provide need-based financial assistance to one or more undergraduate juniors or seniors each year.  This past year, DES members contributed nearly $15,000 to the fund.  In addition, DES members gave very generously to other DePaul programs, schools and scholarships.  The DES members made a difference at DePaul during their working years and are still making a difference today with their generous support.  DePaul thanks each and everyone of you!

DES Awards Third Scholarship

At the May 20 Luncheon in the Commons, Denny Shea introduced Brad Helgeland a graduating senior in the College of Computing and Digital Media (CDM) .  Brad thanked the DePaul Emeritus Society members for making it possible for him to finish his last quarter at DePaul.  He said he wasn't sure where the money was going to come from and for a time thought he would not be able to complete his education this year.  He told the members present how extremely appreciative he was of the scholarship -- that it truly was a gift.

Denny Shea thanked the DES membership for its generosity noting over $14,000 specifically had been raised  for the DES Endowed Scholarship so far this year.  A final giving report for FY2011 will be made available after the close of the fiscal year.

May 20 DES Activities Confirmed

Invitations will be going out shortly for the May 20, 2011 DES events. Please watch your email and/or snail mail (depending on how you requested to receive DES communications) for information regarding the activities of the day.

Jack Leahy and Harvette Grey have been working with the DuSable Museum of African American History to create a special tour just for DES Members. The flyer will outline transportation options, times and what the tour will cover. The tour will take place the morning of May 20 and arranged transportation will have attendees back at the Lincoln Park Campus in time for the Luncheon. “The DuSable Museum of African American History, the first and oldest institution of its kind in the country, has been dedicated to the collection, preservation, interpretation and dissemination of the history and culture of Africans and Americans of African descent.” If you are not familiar with the Museum and its holdings, click on DuSable Museum for more information.

When you return to campus, refreshments will be available followed by DES updates and a wonderful lunch shared with many colleagues. During lunch, we will have the opportunity to meet our 2011 DES Scholarship recipient, Brad Helgeland. His scholarship has been made possible through your generous contributions. It is always special for the person receiving the gift and those who have made it possible to meet.

After lunch, Fr. John Richardson has agreed to speak to us about the memoires he is writing. His focus is the driving forces for DePaul’s development in the past 50 years. We know everyone who shares part of those 50 years will be most interested in his insights.

Wrapping up our Luncheon time, we are very pleased Rosa Perez, AVP Compensation and Benefits, will be there to provide some clarity on costs related to mail-order prescription drug expense under the BCBSIL plan coverage and how we can all minimize expenses in this area. Information that is very timely.

DES Endowed Scholarship

The DePaul Emeritus Society Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually. Consideration for this scholarship is given to all full-time students enrolled at DePaul University who are in their junior or senior years of undergraduate study. Eligible students will demonstrate financial hardship; possess a C average or better; and a record of study that highlights a commitment to completing a degree at DePaul University.

One student is selected each year, representing each of the undergraduate schools and colleges of DePaul on a rotating basis. The first award was made in 2009.
