Born September 6, 1918 in St. Cloud MN to John and Josephine (Meinz) Hollenhorst. Married Ann Margaret Lynch June 2, 1951, beloved wife of 60 years who died November 30, 2011. Survived by children John (Pam), Madison WI; Sarah (Al Manthei), Arcadia FL; Martha (Joseph T. Griffin III) Ketchum ID; and Kate (Gregory) Buckardt and grandchildren James and Gillian, Lake Forest IL. Siblings preceding him in death include Dr. Robert W. (Alice) Rochester MN, Carl P. (Priscilla) Riverside CA, Lorraine (Virgil) Weber, St Cloud MN, John A. (Janet) Arden Hills MN, and Richard (Dolores) Fargo ND. He is survived by Virginia Pleas, Seattle WA, Sister Bernice, Notre Dame IN, Edith (Thomas) Hering, Kona HI, Elaine (Ron) McKinley, Bay Village OH and sister-in-law Jacque Berger, Elmhurst, IL.
Don served in the US Army 1942-46, earned battle stars in Normandy and Ardennes, and was awarded a Bronze Star. He was a member of the Amer. Philosophical Assn, Phi Sigma Tau, Amer. Legion, Ret. Officers Assn, ACLU, Oxfam, the Art Institute and the Chicago Botanic Garden. Don grew up in a family strongly influenced by Grandma Josephine to value education, and each of 10 siblings helped the next to achieve their academic goals. After earning his PhD from Notre Dame, he began his scholarly career on the editorial staff of the Great Books of the Western World, and was co-translator of The Material Logic of John of St. Thomas. He was on the faculty at Loyola-Chicago and at Barat College in Lake Forest (1952-83; Academic Dean, 1972-79). Don demonstrated that education is a life-long process by learning to swim at age 40 (attaining lifeguard status), and to surf the internet at age 80, while keeping an open mind and staying informed about current events. He savored opportunities to travel the US and Europe, visit with extended family, golf until age 90, and, most importantly, share experiences with Ann, their children, and grandchildren. Don will be remembered by colleagues and family as a kind, loving and involved father, grandfather, uncle and friend, an accomplished scholar, and a consummate gentleman.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Spring Meadows and Autumn Leaves. A private ceremony honoring Don and Ann will be held at a later date; in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made online to Hollenhorst Tribute at the Chicago Botanic Garden.
